Calistoga appellation gets the OK

After holding their breath for six years, Napa Valley winemakers can now put the name "Calistoga" on wines made from grapes grown in that historic town, federal regulators have ruled.

The decision (read it here in PDF) ends a long slog through regulatory red tape, and completes a crucial piece of the valley's intricate system for labeling its wines — one that stands to make bottles from the area even more valuable.

"We're all fired up," said James "Bo" Barrett, proprietor of the Chateau Montelena winery, who began petitioning the Treasury Dept. in 2003. "I didn't realize it was going to be a federal project, but it turned out to be one."

The decision by the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which regulates U.S. wine and wine labels, will allow any wine made from grapes grown in the Calistoga appellation, surrounding the town in northern Napa County, to include the name on the label starting early next year. A state law backed by Napa vintners requires that the words "Napa Valley" also appear on labels.

"Today's a good day for us," said Terry Hall, spokesman for the Napa Valley Vintners, the trade group that represents many of the valley's top wineries.

The vintners' group said that the approval came about in large part because of efforts by Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, to press the bureau to take action.

The petition to add Calistoga to labels, officially launched in 2005, hit a major snag in November 2007, when the bureau announced it was considering changing the rules for the approval process for place names, or appellations.

Good decision. Calistoga has unique soil conditions and weather that produces interesting wines. This brings the number of California appellations to 94.

So Gali has been on and off sore for about a week and a half now. It's more on than off, but very subtle. To myself and my trainer it looks like it's muscular in his upper right shoulder/elbow area, near the point of the shoulder. I'm not really sure what the next step is going to be for us. I've buted him a few times and he looks better after that, but I'd rather not have to bute him much more. I'd rather figure out how to make him feel better.

Half of the time he's 100% sound at the walk, the other half he's just careful and short strided with that leg. When I jog him, he throws his head up and takes a VERY careful step for his first step into the trot only, and then settles into an almost sound gait. Riding him around at the walk and trot and warming him up seemed to help until the last time I tried, riding improved his walk but made his trot worse. Yesterday I walked him around and jogged him in hand, his walk seemed fine but his trot was again not right. He's being super careful with that first transition step. When it first showed up he was just being short strided with that leg, the head-toss is a new development about 5 or 6 days ago.

Does it sound like muscle soreness? He has been in a lot more work than usual lately, but we built up to it at what seemed like a good pace. He was seen by a chiro about a week before the first hint of soreness came up, and his saddle is fitted to him, so it's not a back issue. Would it be worth it to have a vet out yet, or should I give him more time and rest? Should I keep trying to warm him up and stretch him out under saddle?

At work, we've had a lot of issues with fraud (I work for an online company) and almost daily, I am approached by one of my co-workers who continually say, "I'm weary about letting this order go, can you (do whatever) to verify it?"

REALLY? You're weary about an order? And I'm the one that has to do the work on it? I believe the word is WARY, folks. Please, don't add an "e." It's not what you think it means. ::headdesk::

01.) There's this amazing person in Adam Lambert fandom who is so upset at the fact that he's being unfairly censored, that every time a network cancels one of his appearances, she buys hundreds of copies of his new music video on iTunes to gift to his fans who need it. The first time he got canceled, she bought 1000, and now every time after that, she's doing 100. Like, I cannot even comprehend the beauty. His fans are so beautiful, they have so much heart. AND I AM SO PROUD OF HIM.
